I created "Warrior" using a discarded, plastic, broken kite, I found at the Recylce Center in Ocala (I have pics from when I went the day for the tour). I loved the design, it was a colorful featherlike plastic kite.
I used the "feathers", cutting them up individually, to represent not only discarded but still usuable material, but also symbolic of how we all want to fly. Freedom and to soar. Also, symbolic because at our basic roots, we are resourceful individuals and also as a community. I chose to create this mixed media piece as a "Warrior", native american woman, our heritage, the foundation of America. Native Americans were very resourcesful, when taking the life of an animal, they would use all aspects, not only the skin for clothing or shelter, but also the meat, the bones, etc., for survival. The feathers and headdress (especially the feathers) are representative of tribes, ceremonial rituals and their culture. Other materials I recycled were beads and some fiber (ribbon/lace).
