The upcycled part of my work is made with popsicle sticks that have actually had popsicles on them and have been bleached, wood from a 6' privacy fence that had been torn down, eyelashes, nail polish a CD and black matt board. My goal was to use Popsicles sticks in an art project, not a craft project. I glued the popsicle sticks to the matt in a herringbone pattern. I didn't attempt to hide the sticks when painting the background color, so the sticks are recognizable. The eyes and lips were painted with nail polish, and I hot glued on the eyelashes and trimmed off the raggedy ends. You have no idea how hard it is to draw and paint on popsicle sticks! The message is what you think the being is saying to you when you first look at it, plus what you think the artist is trying to say. Is the artist making a social comment on gender? Is the artist commenting on how young girls are dolled up for beauty pageants to look twice their age and then are not prepared for the reactions from the young men? Or are they? Is the artist trying to portray the being as sexual or sensual, or avoid sexual attributes altogether? Or in the end, was the artist just trying to use all of those saved popsicle as an art project and just fill up the space with absolutely nothing to say?
